Seminar on Domestic Violence on Women:
A one-day seminar on Domestic Violence on Women was organized in the University Campus on 29th October 2003. Over three sessions, issues such as the definition of domestic violence, legal aid available and the role of the Police Department were discussed.

Kuvempu Centenary Celebrations:
Kuvempu Centenary celebrations were organized in the Women University on
31st December 2003 by giving a lecture on Kuvempu as a poet and a reformer of the 20th Century. As part of the celebrations, the University conducted essay, speech, and singing competitions for the students of the University and of women’s colleges. The enthusiastic participation of the students projected the wealth of Kuvempu’s writing.


Inauguration of Karnataka State Women University, Bijapur. 23rd January 2004:

The Karnataka State Women University, Bijapur was formally inaugurated by Smt. Sonia Gandhi, President of AICC, at 1-45 p.m. on 23rd January 2004, in a function characterized by simplicity and dignity. His Excellency Shri. T.N. Chaturvediji, Governor of Karnataka and Chancellor of the University and other dignitaries were presided over the occasion.

NSS Camp:
The NSS Unit of the University conducted a ten-day camp for the volunteers at Torvi Tanda 1, from 24-01-2004. The Vice-Chancellor Dr. Syeda Akhtar inaugurated the camp. In the course of the camp, student-volunteers made social, cultural, religious, and educational study of the L+
ambani population of the Tanda. At the valedictory of the camp the locals expressed their gratitude for the excellent work done by the volunteers. The success of the camp, it is hoped, will aid in psychological, social development of volunteers and in instilling social confidence and leadership qualities in them.

International Women’s Day Celebrations:
The International Women’s Day was celebrated in a unique way, from 8th March to 9th March by organizing a seminar on the different aspects of “Women in Kuvempu’s Writing”. Dr. Kamal Hampana, a welknown Kannada writer and President of 71st All India Kannda Sahitya Sammelana, inaugurated the event by giving a thought provoking speech on Kuvempu’s writing and women. Dr. Syeda Akhtar, VC, speaking on the occasion said that self-confidence in women was the key to the solution of several problems facing society and that once women are empowered, this would be made possible. Spread over six sessions the seminar was a great success with the students in the audience keenly participating in the discussions at the end of every session.

Seminar on HIV/AIDS and Opening of Aids Counseling Center
In the Campus:
A two-day seminar on ‘ AIDS Talk Group and Training on Women Health Issues- Gender Sensitization and HIV/AIDS’ between 14-03-04 and 15-03-2004 at the Ambedkar Bhavan on the University Campus. The seminar was jointly organized by the NSS Regional Center, Bangalore, and KSWU. Pr. Ranjan Welukar, Senior Programme officer, Commonwealth, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Asha Kamat, UNISEF Consultant, Bangalore, declared open the counseling center on the campus.

Dr. Ambedkar Jayanthi Celebrations:
Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary was celebrated at the Ambedkar Bhavan on the University Campus on 14th April 2004.

Basava Jayanthi Celebration:
His Holiness Shree Shivamurthi Muragharajendra Sharanaru of Chitradurga inaugurated Basava Jayanthi celebrations in the University on 22nd April 2004. Speaking on the occasion the progressive swamiji spoke of the relevance of the ideals of Basavanna in our age.

Sports and Athletics events:
The KSWU Annual Sports and Athletics competitions were held at BLDE’s grounds from 1 to 2 May, 2004. The Volleyball and Throw ball cups were won by the Women’s Studies team. Triveni Savant of Sociology Department was declared General Champion.

Other Activities:
Apart from these events the University conducted several programmes in collaboration with Prasaranga of Kannada University, NSS regional center, Lions Club and Temperance Board. Along with the establishment of counseling center, the University also created Quality Assurance Cell, Health Center and an extension counter of Syndicate Bank on the University campus.

The University also held consultative meetings on the campus with the Vice-Chancellors of Gulbarga and Karnatak Universities.
